Eva & Franco Mattes

“We always wanted to organize an exhibition on the darknet, to explore a place most are not familiar with. If the surface internet is like Art Basel, then the darknet would be your artist-run space in a dirty basement in Bushwick. A place that’s a bit harder to find, that works mainly on word of mouth, but where you might discover something unexpected.

An uncharted territory, a remote location at the periphery of the internet, the darknet is very different from the internet we are all familiar with – with its logic of quantification, data mining and profiling. On the surface time is fast, everything is meant for immediate satisfaction and easy consumption. The darknet is also moving, operating, only at a slower speed. It’s the slow of slow food, as opposed to fast food. It is anonymous, free of commercial constrictions and full of possibilities.

Can we still imagine a place with no likes, shares, comments and recommendations? A place with only content? It may be frustrating: how am I going to know how many views my video has? But it might be actually liberating, almost zen, forcing the FOMO out of you.

Maybe the darknet is just a metaphor for something we are struggling to find, an alternative.
