Lilia Luganskaia

Die Künstlerin Lilia Luganskaia lebt und arbeitet in Amsterdam. Ihr Werk ‘You can only picture it with your eyes’ erinnert an ein russisches Märchen – und hinterfragt die Herkunft touristischer Souvenirs, wie wir sie heute kennen.

«In the Russian fairytale “Go There, Don’t Know Where and Fetch I don’t know What”, a royal hunter was sent to a distant land called ‘There, Don’t Know Where’ by a king.

He was requested to bring back an unknown object, called ‘I don’t know What’, as proof that he had completed his mission. If he failed, the king would take the hunter’s wife, but how would the king decide if the mission had been successfully completed? The hunter thought that perhaps the object would have to be unrecognisable to the king, but this was a challenge because the king had apparently been exposed to many exotic objects.

This connects to the early historical concept of a souvenir as rooted in the idea of the pilgrimage.

Long before we travelled for pleasure, traveling existed as pilgrimage, and people wanted to bring back a pebble as a memento: a small trophy to prove they’d completed their journey.

I sought to combine both of those concepts: the search for an unknown memento that we seek to bring home as proof from an ‘don’t know where’ destination and how this results in the tourist actually creating the artifacts of tourism.»
